During her 20 years of elected service in Arlington, Ms. Mary Hynes effectively led efforts to improve management systems and capital planning processes, develop long-term plans and enhance civic participation.

Ms. Hynes served on the School Board from 1995-2006. Under her leadership, Arlington implemented its nationally-known system of public school choice, began its intense focus on closing the achievement gap between white and non-white students and embarked on a $400M capital planning program.

Ms. Hynes was elected to the County Board from 2008-15, serving as Chair or Vice-Chair for 4 of those years. During her tenure, Hynes championed the creation and adoption of the Affordable Housing Master Plan, overhauled the maintenance capital planning process, revamped the Citizen Advisory Commission process and led an award-winning comprehensive review of community facility needs.

Ms. Hynes served on the WMATA Board from 2011-2015 and was a member of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission for 8 years. She continues to serve as the NOVA representative to the Commonwealth Transportation Board and on the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority.

In 2013 Ms. Hynes received the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) Regional Leadership Award for her work as Chair of COG’s Region Forward Coalition, the public-private consortium created to pursue our vision for the region’s future.
